Firelands vascular surgeons achieve milestone for procedure to reduce risk of stroke
(Sandusky, Ohio) The Firelands Physician Group vascular surgery team recently completed their 100th transcarotid artery revascularization (TCAR) procedure. TCAR is a minimally invasive approach for patients who need carotid artery treatment. Matthew Langenberg, M.D., fellowship-trained vascular surgeon, and Jeffrey Buehrer, M.D., fellowship-trained vascular surgeon, perform the TCAR procedure.
“TCAR is a notable option in stroke prevention for patients with a build-up of plaque in the two main arteries in the neck that supply blood to the brain,” said Dr. Langenberg. “TCAR is significantly less invasive, so patients usually have an easier recovery and can return to their normal routine faster.
Each year, in the United States, someone has a stroke every 40 seconds, and every four minutes, someone dies from a stroke. Statistics show that about 40% of stroke deaths occur in males and 60% in females. The risk of stroke more than doubles each decade after the age of 55.
