"My transitional year residency at Firelands was an incredible experience that provided me with a strong foundation in clinical skills and a supportive community that helped me grow both personally and professionally. I'm grateful for the opportunity to have trained here and would highly recommend it to future residents."

"My time at Firelands was well supported and served as a great foundation to begin my medical career. I was pleased with the amount of endless support from the faculty! The atmosphere at the institution was always collegial, which made for a great workplace to receive quality training."

Nestled on the scenic shores of Lake Erie, Firelands is a hidden gem for graduate medical education. Due to a 1:1 resident to preceptor ratio, I had an opportunity to perform a multitude of procedures, gain appropriate autonomy and learn from a broad range of clinical experiences. Additionally, I was able to teach, mentor, and lecture to medical students from both Ohio University and Des Moines University. Research opportunities exist as well – working with the Chief Medical Informatics Officer, we were able to investigate an artificial intelligence algorithm able to predict sepsis 7 hours before it occurred. Finally, the medical education staff at Firelands is second to none – I always felt as though the environment was extremely collegial and supportive of my training efforts. Although I will be sad to move on to my advanced program in Diagnostic Radiology, I feel like I could not have picked a better program than Firelands for my Transitional Year Residency and would do it again in a heartbeat.”

“I was first made aware of the Firelands Family Medicine Residency Program during my third and fourth year clinicals where I worked closely along side some of the family medicine residents. I believe the atmosphere at Firelands was just what I was looking for: small enough for direct one-on-one attention from attendings, but also large enough for a variety of patient cases to diversify my skill set. The culture is geared heavily towards resident autonomy, which helped sharpen my skills as a provider, but it also allows for plenty of work/life balance.”

"Completing a transitional year at Firelands was such a blessing. From the moment I started, it was one big family. Everyone I worked with was so helpful, and the main goal is to help you become a great physician. The medical education staff is very approachable. They worked with me to schedule my away auditions and interviews. I had a great work-life balance while working as a resident, and I was able to create a life in Sandusky. Even though I was only in Sandusky for one year, I developed meaningful relationships with my patients in continuity clinic. I definitely felt prepared to start my new residency, but I miss Firelands and Family Health Services, Sandusky, and all of the friends I made during my time there."
