Non-Invasive Solution for Liver Disease
Fibroscan is a pain-free option to scan and assess your liver. It has eliminated the need for surgical interventions to evaluate and treat liver conditions, thus providing a comfortable and convenient option for patients.
Firelands Health gastroenterologists use the FibroScan to detect fatty liver disease. It does not carry the same risks as invasive biopsies, such as pain, infection and bleeding. With FibroScan, patients do not have any special preparation or sedation. We can also monitor changes to a patient’s liver health over time because the scan delivers rapid results and can be performed multiple times.
FibroScan uses ultrasound technology to gauge the stiffness of the liver and assess fibrosis (scarring). During the procedure, a small probe is placed on the skin over the liver, and low-frequency sound waves are transmitted through the liver tissue. The FibroScan device then measures the speed of these sound waves through the liver, providing an accurate assessment of liver stiffness. It takes only a few minutes and requires no recovery time.
Liver diseases can be passed through families or caused by obesity, high cholesterol, diabetes, excessive alcohol consumption and viruses. If you have liver disease, you’ll likely experience numerous symptoms that signal that your liver is no longer functioning properly. These symptoms include, but are not limited to yellowing of your skin or eyes; pain and swelling in your abdomen, legs, and/or ankles; itchy skin; dark-colored urine and pale-colored stool; chronic fatigue; nausea; vomiting; and easy bruising.
