Sock it to Me

compression socks

While compression socks are beneficial, they used to have a less-than-favorable connotation. Not so anymore, with the now fashionable socks taking the market by storm.

Benefits of wearing

Who knew socks could be sized with different pressure levels? Compression socks are like a hug to your leg, helping move blood more efficiently through it. Compression is highest at the ankle and slowly decreases as it moves up your leg. Compression socks and stockings come in different levels of compression for different purposes. The pressure in compression garments is measured in mmHg, millimeters of mercury, the same as your blood pressure.

Who needs them?

Even if you don’t have chronic swelling or a vascular problem in your legs, light compression socks may help you feel less tired if you have to stand all day or feel good during a run. They may also help prevent the formation of spider veins during pregnancy.

If you’re going on a long plane ride, consider a moderate level of compression sock to help prevent deep vein thrombosis (DVT), or blood clots.

Strong compression socks are for use after surgical procedures on leg veins, for moderate to severe swelling, for a known tendency for DVT, and to prevent sudden low blood pressure that can cause someone to pass out when they stand.

How long should you wear them?

The duration for wearing socks depends on why you’re wearing them. A general recommendation is to put them on first thing in the morning, before any swelling begins, and wear them all day. Unless your provider advises otherwise, it isn't necessary to wear them to bed since your feet are at the same level as your heart.

Where to buy them?

Options for compression socks are widely available. Sporting goods stores, pharmacies, super stores and online shops offer multiple options.
