Dizzy? Vestibular Rehab Could Help

dizzy? Vestibular rehab could help

What is vestibular rehab?

Vestibular rehabilitation therapy (VRT) is a specialized form of physical therapy that can significantly improve your quality of life if you're experiencing frequent dizziness or balance issues.

What does vestibular rehab treat?

Inner ear problems

Vestibular rehabilitation therapy treats inner ear problems such as vestibular neuritis, labyrinthitis and Meniere’s disease. It works by retraining your brain to compensate for the imbalance caused by dysfunction within the inner ear. You can accomplish this by performing various exercises that require you to move your eyes and/or head in ways that challenge your brain's interpretation of sensory information.

Trauma and neurological issues

Vestibular rehabilitation therapy can treat neurological issues such as benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV), stroke, traumatic brain injury, multiple sclerosis (MS) and vestibular migraine. You will work to improve your balance, gait and coordination, and even strengthen certain muscles. Targeted movements and balance training promote neuroplasticity, which can stimulate the growth of new neural connections and enhance existing ones throughout your nervous system.

How do I start vestibular rehab?

The first step is to consult with your primary care provider (PCP). They can evaluate your symptoms and refer you to a physical therapist who specializes in vestibular rehabilitation.

What happens during therapy?

You’ll work closely with a licensed physical or occupational therapist who will establish an exercise plan. Your therapist will demonstrate exercises you can perform under the therapist’s supervision as well as in the comfort of your home.

Is vestibular rehab guaranteed to help?

While VRT can be highly effective, individual results vary depending on factors such as the underlying cause of the dizziness and the patient’s overall health. It's important to discuss your specific situation with your doctor and physical therapist to understand the potential benefits and limitations of vestibular rehab.
