Medication that fits your genes
The right medication, at the right dose, at the right time.
What is pharmacogenomics and why get tested?
Pharmacogenomics (PGx) uses a person’s genetic profile to help doctors predict their drug response and direct them to prescribe the right medications at the right dose. Pharmacogenetic testing is a simple, painless, one-time-only cheek swab to get DNA to develop effective, safe medications and doses tailored to a person’s genetic makeup.
Why should I get pharmacogenetic testing?
Your provider might order PGx testing to:
- Help guide your current or future medication use.
- Avoid or prevent serious side effects related to certain medications.
- Adjust the dose of a current medication or recommend a different medication.
- Identify a medication, or dose of a medication, most likely to work for you.
Who should be tested?
Commonly, pharmacogenetic testing candidates fall into the following categories:
How is the test performed?
A sterile mouth swab is used to gather a simple, painless, DNA sample from the inside of the cheek.
How much does testing cost?
Pharmacogenetic testing is a routine clinical laboratory test covered by most Medicare, Medicaid, Medicare Advantage Plans, and some major commercial payers. Check with your insurance carrier before testing to make sure this is a covered test.
How do I get tested?
Pharmacogenetic testing is done at Firelands Center for Coordinated Care. Testing does require a referral from your physician.
