Methods of Testing

Polymerase Chain Reaction, or PCR testing, is considered the “gold standard” for diagnosing COVID-19. PCR testing is appropriate for all patient populations and varying levels of exposure. It detects the presence of the disease by replicating DNA from the COVID-19 virus present in a patient’s sample. This test requires a deep nasal (nasopharyngeal) swab for specimen collection. Typical turnaround times range from one to four days from the time of collection.

Antigen testing is best indicated for individuals with known exposure to a confirmed case of COVID-19 and is exhibiting symptoms of the infection. Generally, an antigen test is less specific than PCR testing, but can still be used as a diagnostic tool. It identifies a reaction between specific chemicals and virus particles in a patient sample that appear to be COVID-19. If a reaction occurs in the test, the patient is positive for COVID-19. This test requires a swab just inside the nostril for specimen collection. Turnaround times range from 15 minutes to 24 hours from the time of collection.

Antibody Testing is used to determine a past infection of COVID-19. This test cannot diagnose a current active infection. Testing should occur three to four weeks after possible COVID-19 infection. This is a blood test that can be collected at any Firelands outpatient draw location. Turnaround times range from one to three days.
